Tips to save energy in your home

General Tips

  • Water heaters should be set at 120 degrees F. Anything higher is just a waste of energy.
  • Installing an electronic setback thermostat can conserve energy while helping to save as much as $300 on your annual utility bill.
  • Make sure you have double pane or storm windows up, they can save a home's heat loss by up to 25%. Heat shrunk instant storm window kits are available at most hardware stores.
  • Make sure you have adequate insulation in the attic (recommended levels range from R-30 to R-38). 40% of the heat loss in winter and gained in summer is through attics.
  • Caulking up to 30% of a home's heated air can be lost through leaks and cracks. Check spaces where pipes, wires, cables or water faucet's enter the house, and under windowsills.
  • Weather stripping: Windows doors and garage doors (if garage is heated).
  • Put Stabil in lawn mowers, snow blowers etc ... so motors won't freeze in cold weather.

Tune-up your furnace to save on winter heating bills.

  • Is your heating system ready for winter? Just like your car, it's important to have your system tuned up each year. Periodic inspections along with annual check-ups help your furnace run more efficiently and that saves you money.
  • When checking your forced-air furnace: Remove the furnace filter, if it is dirty or clogged, replace it.
  • Check the burner flames. A gas flame should be mostly blue in color. If the flames extend beyond the front opening, are excessively yellow or float around the burner compartment, call a heating contractor.
  • Even if your heating system appears to be in good working order it is important to have it inspected by a qualified heating contractor every year. Annual check-ups will help keep your furnace and venting system operating safely and efficiently all winter.

Conserve on Appliances

  • The following tips can help you get the most conservation mileage out of your energy-efficient appliances.
  • Use the dishwasher when it's fully loaded, set the control for air dry, and set the water temperature at about 140 degrees just high enough to dissolve the detergent.
  • Clean condenser coils regularly on older refrigerators and freezers. Keep door openings to a minimum, and defrost when frost builds to a 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Use your washer and dryer to capacity, but don't over- load them. Use cool water whenever possible and wash and dry several loads consecutively a warm dryer needs shorter drying time.

Aprilaire Humidifiers

Dry air difficulties
When you heat your home, a variety of indoor problems caused by low relative humidity occur. This low humidity makes you feel uncomfortable, takes moisture from your home, furnishings -- even you and your family.

Heated air dries out and shrinks wood framing around doors and window frames. Gaps occur, permitting cold outside air infiltration. Heat loss and higher heating costs are often the results.

Aprilaire is the answer
Proper humidity reduces heating costs by stopping wood shrinkage. This reduces cold air infiltration around door and window frames. In turn, you'll feel warm at lower temperatures. You can actually dial down your thermostat and still be comfortable.

Proper humidity means:
Comfort -- Aprilaire eliminates dry nose, throat, itchy skin and reduces static electricity.
Well being -- ask your doctor. Proper humidity helps repel upper respiratory problems caused by dry air.
Preservation -- Aprilaire protects your home and furnishings from damaging dryness and shrinkage.
Energy savings -- Aprilaire reduces heating costs because you'll feel warmer at lower temperatures.
Water conservation -- Even our largest units use less than $15 of water per heating season.

Check thermostat is turned to the heat position. Check furnace switch on or by the furnace. Check circuit breaker or fuse.

Burners won't ignite
Check if pilot is lit.

Pilot's lit, blower does not work
Does the fan run if putting the fan in on position at the thermostat? If not, check and see that the switch is on and furnace is turned on. Make sure the blower door is on right. If you recently changed the filter, make sure the filter is in right and not bumping the blower door.

Check your Home for Carbon Monoxide NOW!

A little frost on the pumpkin will call for some heat in the house. So before the chill hits, have your furnace inspected.

You can't smell, see or taste carbon monoxide (CO), but you need to be informed about it. CO results when any fuel is burned. Under normal conditions, small amounts of CO are produced and vented outdoors. But when faulty combustion occurs, dangerous levels of CO can be produce.

A qualified technician can check your heating system for these problems. A cracked heat exchanger, inadequate fresh air, or blocked chimneys or flues.

Carbon monoxide poisoning is a form of slow suffocation. The gas attaches itself to hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in blood. The blood carries less oxygen and the body suffocates. CO poisoning symptoms begin with sluggishness and headache. Later there is dizziness and loss of consciousness.

Although it has been getting a lot of publicity lately, the fact is that CO poisoning leading to death is unusual. In fact, in the U.S. ( with a population of over 250 million), there are only 800 to 1,000 people who die from it each year, according to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter. Nonetheless, if you use any appliance that burns fuel, a CO detector is a good idea. Be sure to buy an Underwriter Laboratories approved detector that has some of the following:

  • An audible alarm.
  • Power-on light.
  • A manual reset button.
  • Test button.
  • LED digital readout.
  • Plug in model.
Prevent build-up
  • Have your furnace, venting systems and chimney inspected by a qualified contractor each year.
  • Periodically check your furnace and water heater vent pipes for rust, corrosion or damage. Replace the pipes if necessary.
  • Don't use your gas range to head your home.
  • Never burn charcoal in your home, garage, work shed, recreational vehicle or other enclosed area.
  • Be sure your chimney flue is open each time you use your fireplace.
  • Never run a car engine, lawn mower, snow blower or other combustion engine in a closed area like your garage or basement.
  • Symptoms and first aid
Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, nausea, coughing and an irregular heartbeat. victims may appear pale, but then develop a cherry red color on lips and ear tips.

CO victims need fresh air immediately. Open windows and doors and call emergency response personnel, even if the victim seems to be recovering.

    Prevention
Should you be alarmed? No. When properly installed and maintained, gas furnaces and hot water heaters do not pollute your home. Your best defense against CO is knowledge about the danger.
